Fiat Sets New Record For Lowest CO2 Emissions

16 11 2009

Fiat Automobiles has again shown its commitment to a cleaner environment following the announcement that its average CO2 emissions figure on cars sold in Europe during the first half of 2009 has dropped to 129.1 g/km.

The new figure – corroborated by automotive advisory leader JATO – means that Fiat is the only mainstream car brand to achieve the European average goal, of 130 g/km by 2015, five years early.

One important contribution to this result is the enormous growth of environment-friendly natural gas as an alternative fuel for passenger cars. During the first half of 2009 around 65,000 Fiat Natural Power cars, with an average of 115.8 g/km in CO2 emissions, were sold in Europe, a figure more than 13 g/km less than the brand’s already recording-breaking average.

This achievement contributed to the establishment of another record: Fiat Group Automobiles is number one in the results posted by manufacturing groups (132.9 g/km), in front of Toyota, PSA, Renault and Hyundai.

“Improving the environment is not a goal for the future, but something we can do right away,” says Lorenzo Sistino, CEO of Fiat Automobiles. “These figures show the unceasing dedication Fiat lavishes on seeking innovative solutions to control polluting emissions and the level of CO2.

“But Fiat’s commitment has always been to the public’s real needs and won’t be stopping here. Our aim is actually to reinforce our European record in emissions reduction by introducing new engines, new technologies and new applications.

“New engines are being introduced – like the innovative MultiAir technology on petrol engines, making them capable of guaranteeing up to 10 per cent lower CO2 emissions, and the new generation of Common Rail MultiJet diesel engines that will make their debut on the Punto Evo and that will be gradually adopted on all of our Group’s cars.

“New technologies, like Start&Stop, introduced on the Fiat 500, is now standard on all Punto Evo Euro 5 engines. Start&Stop can cut CO2 emissions in the urban cycle by as much as 12 per cent.

“Other applications such as eco:Drive – our innovative software programme – allows drivers to analyse personal driving styles so as to optimise consumption and emissions. Sixty thousand people have downloaded it in less than a year since its launch, and 25,000 are using it daily.”

Attention paid to sustainable mobility is part of a strategic undertaking by the entire Group. Fiat Group was recently acknowledged as a leader in terms of sustainability following its entry into the Dow Jones Sustainability (DJSI) World and Dow Jones Sustainability STOXX Indexes.

Fiat 500 Opens For Summer

16 11 2009

Fiat is taking orders now for what will be the hottest fashion item for the coming summer – the new Fiat 500C, the open top version of Fiat’s Bambino, the car that has already captured hearts and, thanks to its green credentials, minds, around the world.

Fiat 500C Elle Macpherson“The interest in the open top Fiat 500 C has already proven as strong as it has been for the normal Fiat 500,” explains Lawrie Malatios, General Manager for Fiat in New Zealand. “So we have opened up the order books now, so everyone who wants to be seen in the chicest car this summer can be ready to take their top off the moment summer arrives!”

The new Fiat 500C is available now to order in two versions, both equipped with the 1.4 litre 74 kW engine with a choice of a manual or DuaLogic gearboxes, with deliveries starting in early January. Prices start at a recommended retail price of $37,990 for the manual version and $39,990 for the self shifting DuaLogic version, excluding statutory and on road costs.

“The 500C has been the car to be seen in during the European summer this year and the demand, like that for its solid roof cousin, has run well ahead of supply,” explains Mr Malatios. “With limited numbers coming to New Zealand and existing pent-up interest, we expect the expect demand to run ahead of supply here, too, so now is the time to start planning for chic open top motoring this summer!”

The stylish new Fiat 500 C pays homage to the original 1957 fabric roof Fiat 500, but today’s thoroughly modern interpretation offers customers innovative solutions in terms of mechanical design, performance and comfort.

The Fiat 500 C’s introduction is thus absolutely in line with the authentic Fiat tradition of giving customers access to segment firsts in terms of content and technology, and comes just 18 months after the local launch of the Fiat 500.

Starting from the basis of the highly successful hatchback, the introduction of a soft top version does not change the winning characteristics of the model, such as its four comfortable seats and its comprehensive safety equipment, but it does add new functions that heighten enjoyment, including easy access to the boot even when the soft top is fully open, thanks to a clever system of parallelogram hinges.

Another strong point of this original convertible version is its exceptional climate and Fiat 500Cacoustic comfort. Thorough aerodynamic research means that turbulence experienced on the move with the roof open has been reduced to a minimum, allowing full enjoyment of fresh air and the company of fellow passengers.

The decision to re-interpret the original design in a modern idiom, with an electric sliding roof that retains the shape of this classic vehicle, makes the Fiat 500 C less of a seasonal product and one that can be enjoyed the whole year round. In short, all these features make this new vehicle one of the most successful convertibles in the modern city car segment.

The Fiat 500 C soft top stands out for its elegant electrically controlled movements and its impressively finished and carefully selected technical features, from the glass rear window to the third brake light built into the soft top itself.

The new Fiat 500 C has an exclusive feel to its interior, which is embellished with top quality desirable fabrics, including optional Frau leather upholstery, and a long list of standard features: from automatic climate control to the innovative Blue&Me telematics system.

New Fiat 500 C retains the same dimensions as the hatchback (355 cm long, 165 cm wide and 149 cm high) and uses the powerful engine, the 1.4 74 kW petrol engine, available with manual or Dualogic semi-automatic robotised gearboxes.

The commercial launch of Fiat’s latest convertible ensures that the Fiat 500 continues to be much discussed, and confirms its status as an Italian style icon, able to win over the public and critics worldwide. Clear evidence of its success are the 30 awards it has won worldwide, the 11 million internet users who have visited its website (viewing a total of 200 million pages) and more than 360,000 customer orders for the vehicle received in the 59 markets where it is now on sale.

This is all the more impressive when it’s appreciated that more than half this vehicle’s sales have been recorded outside Italy, (50 per cent elsewhere in Europe and 8 per cent in the rest of the world). In each country where it has been launched, the Fiat 500 has generated enormous interest: in Japan, for example, there have been more than 5,000 orders. It should also be recognised that 80 per cent of Fiat 500 customers select the most expensive features and 90 per cent ask for the Blue&Me system.

In short, as an expression of Italy’s pre-eminent automotive design, the Fiat 500 is not merely a super-compact city car, but a real platform upon which Fiat Group Automobiles is building a whole family of cars with advanced technology and great attention to detail. The new Fiat 500 C represents another step forward in this direction.

Alluring shape and innovative design

“The Fiat 500 C is not merely the open version of the 500,” explains Roberto Giolito, Fiat & Abarth Style Director. “In fact, thanks to the wide range of available versions, this new model is really a whole new car in its own right, with a strong personality inherited from the original 1957 model and an undoubted sentimental value brought to it by so many fans over the years. If, on the one hand, the Fiat 500 C respects the original version, on the other it enriches it with new features which, thanks to stylistic choices, afford each one of us maximum freedom of use.”

Fiat 500CThe Fiat 500 C uses a deeper windscreen than the Fiat 500. This is needed to resize the upper cross member; and affords a better view for the rear passengers, increases torsional rigidity and facilitates clean lines. These are also enhanced by the continuity of the windscreen, which extends to the fabric roof without exposing any part of the bodywork (an elegant and technologically sophisticated solution in keeping with the spirit of the 500 C).

If the soft top is down and the boot release is activated, an electronic system automatically lifts the hood a few centimetres to allow the boot to be fully opened. This functional and neat solution contributes to the fact that the Fiat 500 C is best in class for ease and versatility of loading and unloading. The luggage compartment itself, (with a capacity of 182 litres – just three litres less than the saloon version), together with a traditional upwards-opening boot and wide access, is spacious and easy to load.

The interior of the Fiat 500 C boasts top quality materials. In particular, the new sporty seats are upholstered in a high quality durable fabric. The backrest and cushions of the rear seats keep passengers well located.

An innovative soft top for a unique style

The Fiat 500 C soft top is characterised by sophisticated electrically controlled movements and innovative technical solutions. In particular, a colour-coded moulding of the same colour as the soft top acts as a spoiler and houses a third brake light, creating similar aerodynamics to the saloon version – a class-leading Cx of 0.33.

In addition, when the soft top is down, the spoiler is arranged so that the third brake light is always visible. The double-layered roof fabric ensures the best possible insulation from the elements, and along with the fabric covered pillars, completes an attractive finish from the inside.

The electrically operated soft top can be controlled either by buttons next to the interior roof light, or from the car’s remote control unit. In addition, the soft top can be operated at any speed under 37 mph (60 km/h).

The soft top is designed to be easy to use: to open it, just press the button for at least half a second to trigger the movement that then continues automatically up to the spoiler position (a midway point can of course be chosen by pressing the button again). Press the button again for at least half-a-second to fully open the roof. When using the remote control, the roof can be opened only as far as the spoiler. For safety reasons, the roof stops at around 25 cm from complete closure; (just press and hold the button to complete the movement).

When the boot is open, the soft top can only be closed (the opening function is de-activated). However, if the roof is fully open and the boot needs to be opened, the soft top automatically moves to a midway point to avoid obstructing loading operations.

Finally, the standard wind-stop can easily be positioned behind the rear headrests (attached to the parcel shelf). This wind tunnel-tested accessory has been designed specifically for the Fiat 500 C. It offers a notable reduction in turbulence for all passengers, at all speeds, and there is no need to remove the wind-stop to open or close the soft top (another unique feature for this vehicle segment).

Environmentally friendly engines

The Fiat 500C’s 1.4 litre engine boasts sophisticated technology and is characterised by its Fiat 500Clively and flexible feel.

The Fiat 500′s power units are produced by Fiat Powertrain Technologies (FPT), the division of the Fiat Group that is wholly responsible for the innovation, research, design and production of engines and gearboxes for all types of vehicle: from cars to trucks, boats and agricultural equipment. With around 20,000 employees, 16 factories and 11 research centres across nine countries, this division is one of the most important global players in powertrain manufacturing. At FPT, around 3,000 highly specialised technicians are dedicated to developing and engineering innovative technologies. More than 40 patents filed every year is proof of the quality and seriousness of this commitment, making FPT a centre of excellence for technology and continuous innovation.

Fiat’s 1.4 litre 16V engine delivers 74 kW at 6,000 rpm and a maximum torque of 131 Nm at 4,250 rpm. Developed with strong performance and low consumption in mind, this engine puts the Fiat 500 C at the top of its class, with a top speed of 182 kmh and 0-100 kmh acceleration in just 10.5 seconds. Fuel economy is impressive too: in the combined cycle, the 1.4 litre achieves 6.3 l/100 km. With 74 kW available, this compact car is capable of lively performance and quick responses in city traffic.

Class-leading safety

Structurally derived from the Fiat 500 hatchback (the first car under four metres to receive a five-star Euro NCAP crash safety rating), the Fiat 500 C retains all the safety components and features (active and passive) that justifiably place it among the market’s best-in-class.

For example, with seven airbags offered as standard equipment, (two front, two window, two side and one knee bag) the Fiat 500 C is unrivalled in its segment in terms of passive safety. Furthermore, the new car’s stable and efficient braking system combined with its responsive acceleration and reliable handling allows it to emerge unscathed from emergency situations.

The Fiat 500 C uses sophisticated technical solutions to ensure that the driver is in control of the car (active safety): such as ABS anti-lock braking with electronic brake distribution (EBD); an advanced electronic stability program (ESP); anti-slip regulation (ASR), a Hill Holder system – which helps the driver with hill starts – and hydraulic brake assistance (HBA) to help with emergency stops.

Moreover, to ensure the safety of the driver and passengers, the Fiat 500 C has a body designed according to the latest crash resistance criteria. This is the first super-compact car equipped with a front-end structure specifically designed to improve inter-vehicle compatibility in head-on collisions, with a rigid cabin to protect the occupants and high-absorption zones on the outside.

All four seat belts are three-point type – while both front belts have dual pretensioners and load limiters. The front and rear seats are equipped with an anti-submarining system that stops the wearer from sliding underneath the seatbelt during an impact.

The Fiat 500 C has all the dynamic and comfort features that allow users to embark comfortably and safely on any journey. The suspension system plays a fundamental role in this: front suspension is provided by independent MacPherson struts, while the rear suspension is semi-independent with a torsion beam axle. The semi-independent torsion-axle rear suspension system also features an anti-roll bar derived from the Abarth 500 to improve handling and comfort.

Standard and optional features

The Fiat 500C version stands out for its Chrome kit, which includes chrome trim on the side windows, exhaust tail pipe, the interior door handle inserts, gear lever and the front and rear bumpers. Standard equipment includes automatic climate control, ESP, fog lights and parking sensors. The unique to the 500C alloy wheels with 185/55 R16 tyres and electric wing mirrors painted to match the body also come as standard, as does climate AirCon, ABS brakes power windows and locks and the innovative Blue&Me telematics system, which even allows owners to talk to their Fiat 500! Blue&Me, with its eco:Drive programme also enables the 500C to teach its owner to drive more economically.

Citroën Lights Up In Paris

16 11 2009

To celebrate 90 years of Citroën and 120 years of the Eiffel Tower, the two are joining forces again, after 75 years, in a stunning display of Créative Technologie.

CitroenEvery night for three months from last Thursday, a special 12-minute light show will take place on the Eiffel Tower – one minute for each decade the ‘Iron Lady’ has stood proudly in the heart of Paris.

Last Thursday evening, Citroën streamed live footage of the event from webcams mounted in 10 new Citroën C3′s positioned at key vantage points around the tower.

The footage was broadcast at www.toureiffel.citroen.com. As well as taking advantage of the new C3′s ‘Zenith’ windscreen, the webcam pictures were displayed in vertical 9:16 format, a revolution for internet video.

Citroën and the Eiffel Tower enjoyed a historic partnership for almost 10 years between 1925 and 1934, when André Citroën had the company’s name displayed in lights on the iconic structure. A total of 250,000 light bulbs and 600 kilometres of electric flex were used to make the 30-metre high letters. The spectacle was recorded in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest advertising sign. The illuminations were so bright that Charles Lindbergh used the tower as beacon when coming into land after his solo flight across the Atlantic.

The new Alfa Romeo Mito

10 11 2009

The new Alfa Romeo Mito is available now at Andrew Simms Alfa Romeo in Newmarket Auckland book a test drive or come in to view at their Newmarket Dealership or book online at www.andrewsimmseurpean.co.nz

Read about the new Alfa Romeo Mito below

Alfa Romeo MiTo Sport (155bhp)Although Alfa Romeo has had small cars in the past, most famously the Alfa Romeo AlfaSud which started a line of cars that lead to the Alfa Romeo 147 in today’s range, the Alfa Romeo MiTo is significantly different in its positioning from previous models. Not only is it in the market sector below the AlfaSud and today’s 147, but also unlike the AlfaSud, which is was designed to compete mass market, every element of the MiTo places it firmly at the premium prestige end of its market sector.

The fact that the MiTo has been designed to be exclusively a three door car has provided the stylists at Alfa Romeo Centro Stile with the freedom to endow the MiTo with a new level of style, internally and externally, that has not been previously available in this market sector.

Most obviously is the way the MiTo tappers behind the ‘b’ pillar to provide not a just coupe style, but also shoulders over the rear wheels akin to those on the Alfa 8C sports car, that lead the eye to rear lights, which include the first of several class-firsts, the safety of LED rear lights replacing conventional light bulbs.

At the front, the shield-shaped grille is imposingly sited at the end of a sculpted V-shaped bonnet, flanked by clear lens and teardrop headlamps. In profile, the high waistline, flared wheel arches, disguised B-pillar and minimal rear overhang combine to communicate power, performance and agility.

Inside the cabin, the high quality interior feels like a car from a class above, with with additional touches such as its unique carbon fibre-look dashboard. The sporty dials are hooded and the central console comes with a satin finish. Careful soundproofing helps create a quiet and refined environment that optimises the inclusion of a quality sound system and integrated Blue & Me™.

The turbocharged Alfa MiTo delivers an engaging and rewarding driver experience. The turbocharged 1.4 litre 114 kW MiTo Sport delivers the type of power normally associated with a significantly larger engine as it accelerates from 0-100 kmh in 8 seconds, and continues to a top speed of 215 kmh, yet offers a combined fuel figure of just 6.5 litres 100 km.

Alfa Romeo’s innovative DNA system is another first for the class. A three-position switch, situated beside the gearlever, alters the throttle response and steering set-up for different driving environments – Dynamic, Normal and All Weather.

Alfa Romeo MiTo (120bhp)In Dynamic mode, the throttle response is quicker, the steering is sharper and the handling is more direct. For icy and loose surface environments the All Weather mode provides a more gentle response. Alfa Romeo’s Electronic Q2 limited slip differential heads a list of dynamic driver aids, including a long list of safety systems. Together, these all help deliver impressive driving dynamics and handling, along with sure-footed road holding capabilities.

In line with entertaining levels of performance and handling, the Alfa MiTo also boasts high levels of safety.

Designed and developed to achieve the highest possible scores in passive and active safety tests, the Alfa MiTo is one of the safest cars on the road, providing driver and passengers with a high level of protection.

In recognition of its safety credentials, the Alfa MiTo has already collected a 5-star Euro NCAP safety rating.

Driver and occupant safety is paramount, and the specification of seven airbags including front airbags, window bags, sidebags and driver’s kneebag work with Alfa Romeo’s Self Aligning Head Restraint – a system that moves the head restraints closer to the neck of the front seat occupants to lessen the effect of whiplash in the event of an impact – is evidence of Alfa Romeo’s commitment to the highest possible safety standards.

During emergency braking, the Alfa MiTo automatically operates its hazard lights to alert other road users.

Both versions of the MiTo are well equipped with Trip computer, cruise control, aircon, remote locking and boot release, steering wheel audio controls, front armrest with locker, leather steering wheel, VDC with hill holder, front electric windows, DNA and a premium six speaker audio system headlining the standard equipment package.

The Alfa Romeo MiTo is launched in New Zealand in one versions highly equipped, high specification version, the 114 kW MiTo Sport that includes Blue&Me Bluetooth telematics with a USB connection, climate control air conditioning, sports bumpers, spoiler and pedals, rear parking sensors, Brembo Brakes, auto wipers, lights and interior mirror as well as front fog lights as the headlines in its standard equipment list.

The MiTo Sport is priced at $44,990 plus statutory charges and delivery.

New Mitsubishi Outlander reveals aggressive styling and upgraded features

10 11 2009

Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand announces the arrival of the new Outlander featuring a distinctive and aggressive styling make-over which includes the company’s trademark “jet fighter” grille, and a host of new comfort, convenience and safety appointments. Improvements to the Outlander’s engineering include the addition of Hill Start Assist on all models and Super All Wheel Control to V6 models.

Outlander has performed superbly,” said Mitsubishi Motors New Zealand general manager of sales and marketing Peter Wilkins. “With the option of five or seven seats it integrates well into large families and commercial users like the space, engine options and, of course, the price.

“Over the past four years, the Mitsubishi Outlander has been the best-selling medium SUV in New Zealand. After such impressive service, it was time for a freshen-up and the new exterior styling and interior appointments have achieved exactly that,” said Mr Wilkins.

“With its city-friendly size and style, its rugged off-road capabilities and all the technology we could squeeze into it, this new Outlander will take you where you want to go in comfort, style, and safety,” said Wilkins.

The big story for the 2010 Outlander is the “next generation” styling, inspired by the outstanding Mitsubishi Outlander GT Prototype displayed at the 2009 New York International Auto Show. The front grille design is taken from the Lancer Evolution’s “jet fighter” look and is complemented by contemporary design elements, such as a reshaped front bumper, side mirrors, fenders and bonnet. Reshaped headlamps, a new rear bumper and side sills complete the slick sports styling.

Complementing the exterior changes, the Outlander interior design has been freshened with the addition of new seat, door and dash trims, leather look to premium models, double-stitching, chrome accents and a brilliant new instrument cluster. Additional Lancer-Evolution-inspired design cues for the VRX include aluminum racing style pedals and a sport-type steering wheel.

Technological upgrades for the new Outlander include the addition of Mitsubishi’s acclaimed Super-All Wheel Control system (S-AWC) to V6 models, improvements to power delivery and fuel economy, the addition of Hill Start Assist (HSA) for all CVT and automatic models and USB inputs for audio connectivity.

Merging Mitsubishi’s experience in off-road and rally racing with production car development, the V6 Outlander features the revolutionary Super-All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system. Beyond simple four-wheel drive, S-AWC is a comprehensive system that improves handling, traction and stability. Using a first-in-class active front limited-slip differential and an electronically controlled four-wheel drive coupling, S-AWC can prevent wheel slip between front to rear and side-to-side, providing greater traction through all types of terrain and inclement weather, including ice, snow and rain.

The new Outlander retains two tried and trusted engine choices. First, the 2.4-litre DOHC 16 valve MPI MIVEC engine provides peppy, yet frugal motoring for drivers with a keen eye for economy and generates 127 kW of power @ 6,000 rpm and 230 Nm of torque @4,100rpm. The 2.4-litre engine is mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) with Sports Mode sequential style shift changes and INVECS Smart Logic.

Drivers with a need for speed will choose the powerful V6 3.0-litre SOHC 24 valve MPI MIVEC engine which now generates 172 kW of power @ 6,250 rpm and 296 Nm of torque @ 3,750 rpm (with 95+ RON fuel). The V6 benefits from improvements to the all-aluminum engine, including a reduction in intake restriction plus optimised camshaft timing and compression ratio. These changes raise the maximum output by a modest 7 kW, but, importantly, also contribute to an improved torque curve for more responsive city driving and improved fuel economy and emissions.

“We’ve worked hard to raise the premium appeal of Outlander with our VRX offerings and the 3.0L model, in particular, provides a level of appointment, technology and power to match,” said Mr Wilkins. “We believe that this new range will raise the bar in the small and medium SUV segment. We have excellent coverage from top to bottom and the product’s success to date indicates consumers love Outlander and this model will continue to be a New Zealand favourite.

All Outlanders are available in a variety of paint colours including the new shades of Ironbark and Atlantic Blue, as well as Rose Red, Cool Silver, Amethyst Black, Effect Grey and Cardrona White. Mitsubishi also provides its industry leading Diamond Advantage warranty on all Outlander vehicles, including a comprehensive 5 year/130,000 km new vehicle warranty, backed up by its 10 year/160,000 km powertrain warranty and a 5 year/130,000km roadside assistance package.

Launching the new Outlander, Peter Wilkins said he couldn’t imagine a vehicle that was better placed to meet the demands of today’s lifestyle oriented go-getters.

“With life moving so fast these days, our customers need a car that can keep up with them and meet all their needs. This new Mitsubishi Outlander gives them everything they need, and even a few extras they might not expect. This truly is a value-packed vehicle that will not disappoint,” said Wilkins.

New Triton – Faster Safer Harder

10 11 2009

Faster, safer, harder – Mitsubishi’s 2010 Triton ( leads the 4WD diesel ute segment on power and safety and its new extended tray squares off a stauncher look.

Among a raft of changes, four-wheel drive models in the 13-strong range receive a new common rail 2.5 litre high-powered turbo-diesel engine; eight models have side and curtain airbags and all but four workhorse variants boast stability and traction control.

“This is a major upgrade for Triton and we’re thrilled with the result,” said Mitsubishi Motors general manager of sales and marketing Peter Wilkins. “We’ve thrown everything but the kitchen sink at it and the class-leading power, torque and safety speak for themselves.

“This is a highly contested segment and we knew we had to deliver exceptional value to be competitive. I’m confident we’ve done that – and some.”

The class-leading 133 kW and 407 Nm are achieved with the manual transmission and generated from a new high-powered engine at 4,000 rpm and 2,000 rpm respectively, representing increases of 11 percent and 15 percent over the previous 3.2 litre power plant.

Those improvements are achieved through adaptation of the proven 4D56 2.5 litre engine still found in the 2WD range. The new engine’s combustion chamber shape and injectors have been modified, a variable geometry turbo has been added and the turbo boost pressure raised.

Increased power has not come at the expense of fuel economy, which, at 8.3 L/100 km, is 9 percent better than the outgoing engine and second equal in the class. Automatic variants provide the same power as the manual, torque is 356 Nm and fuel consumption 9.3 L/100 km.

While the 2WD’s 2.5 litre power plant still generates 102 kW @ 4000 and 319 Nm @ 2000, improvements have been made to fuel economy, which now stands at 8.2 L/100 km for the manual and 8.6 L/100 km for auto variants. These savings have translated to lower CO2 emissions at 214 g/km and 224 g/km respectively.

There are two automatic specifications within the range. The GLS receives a five-speed automatic with Sports Mode, allowing drivers to manually select and hold gears. The rest of the range is equipped with the four-speed auto found in the previous model and Mitsubishi’s Easy Select 4WD transfer.

The GLS also gains Super Select, which, like Easy Select, allows drivers to engage 4WD at speeds up to 100 km/h. Super Select varies with the addition of a viscous centre differential, which, when employed with 4H, allows ‘when-required’ torque transfer between front and rear wheels, improving fuel economy in 4WD.

These features, combined with multi-mode ABS with EBD and active stability and traction control, comprise Mitsubishi All Terrain Technology (MATT) similar to that of the acclaimed Pajero. The rural-focused 4WD GL workhorse variants are the only models in the New Zealand market to host rear diff lock as standard, which replaces stability and traction control.

“We are seeing far more multi-purpose use in this highly contested segment,” he said. “While most diesel utes are sold as commercials, improvements in comfort and ride quality are seeing customers use their vehicles for family-orientated activities too.”

First to market with active stability control and the inclusion of side and curtain airbags has bolstered Triton’s existing four-star safety rating, which Mr Wilkins says best meets the growing demands of consumers. “We’re delighted to lead the market with these critical safety features.”

Along with new bumpers and wheels, Triton’s new wellside tray delivers a squarer finish to the vehicle’s profile. The wellside has been extended by 180 mm and deepened by 55 mm, allowing much-improved capacity for tools and toys. Purchasers of 4WD cab chassis models will benefit from an increased braked towing capacity of 3 tonnes.

Inside, all vehicles receive a new instrument display, centre console and seat trims. All double cab driver’s seats gain height adjust, offering more versatility for the driver, while the GLX and GLS double cabs have extra seat cushioning and bolstering.

The 2010 range holds something for everyone, including one of New Zealand’s few double cab chassis models. Seven 4WD variants include three manual workhorse GL options – in single and double cab chassis and double cab wellside – and GLX and GLS specifications with double cab wellsides available as manual or auto. The six 2WDs host one manual single cab chassis in GLX format. The remainder are double cab wellside with a manual GL and manual or auto GLX and GLS.

Mitsubishi also provides its industry leading Diamond Advantage warranty on all Triton vehicles, including a comprehensive 5 year/130,000 km new vehicle warranty, backed up by its 10 year/160,000km powertrain warranty and a 5 year/130,000km roadside assistance package.

“This is the best warranty and customer care package available from a manufacturer in New Zealand,” said Mr Wilkins. “It provides our customers with the peace of mind that their new Triton comes with the country’s most comprehensive support package.
“This ute is loaded with reasons to buy. We’ve gone to great lengths to provide the best possible options for our Triton customers and to answer some of their requests of the previous model. The combination of power, safety, styling, the best warranty and competitive pricing make Triton hard to beat.”

Pricing for the 4WD range begins at $41,990 while the 2WD specifications start at $33,990

Mazda Zooms through another month

10 11 2009

2008 continues to be a strong year for Mazda New Zealand which achieved a 7.6% market share in November – further extending the company’s position as the fourth placed new vehicle brand in New Zealand for the month as well as YTD.

Andrew Clearwater, managing director Mazda New Zealand, said “Like the rest of the industry, Mazda sales were down on the previous November but we are pleased with our market share and the performance of our core models especially the Mazda6 which continues to lead its class.”

The company had another couple of significant successes in November. In the Automobile Association Energywise Rally, the Mazda6 2.5L Sport Hatch returned an average fuel consumption of 6.05 litres per 100 kilometres. The car came first in its class and second overall.

The iconic Mazda RX-8 capped of a good month for Mazda New Zealand being named National Business Review Sports Car of the Year.

On the global scene production volume for the Mazda6 increased 67.7% (16,078 units) year-on-year while in Japan production of the Mazda2, Mazda3 and Mazda6 exceeded the October 2007 figure by 2.0%.

Mazda reveals refined CX-7

10 11 2009

Mazda’s dynamic crossover, the CX-7, is the latest vehicle in Mazda’s line up to receive a second-generation makeover. The vehicle has a perfect blend of SUV practicality with sports car handling and performance.

While the CX-7 retains the existing 2.3L Direct Injection (DISI) turbo engine and 6-speed Activematic configuration of the existing model, the new version features a number of aesthetic enhancements which are sure to turn heads.

“We are excited to introduce the second generation CX-7. Fans of the first generation vehicle will notice we have refined elements of the original model while retaining the balance of SUV practicality and sports car spirit,” says Andrew Clearwater, Managing Director Mazda New Zealand. “The motoring public will notice these nuances as soon as they sit behind the wheel.”

The new CX-7 provides better fuel economy through model-specific measures including revised shift patterns and a reduction in body weight.

The CX-7’s stunning exterior styling links it with other models in the Mazda family. It takes cues from the new generation Mazda3, adopting the aggressive five point grille and bumper design. This is complemented with a restyled side intake containing newly-designed fog lamps. Also new are the front and rear cylindrical lamp designs and 19-inch alloy wheels which come with lower-profile 235/55 R19 tyres. Other changes to the rear of the vehicle include a roof spoiler with integrated high-mount brake lights.

The cabin of the CX-7 embodies refinement. Particularly notable are the higher quality grains and decorative parts, the incorporation of a new meter design and door trim armrests which incorporate soft pads for a more pleasing tactile quality.

Driver comfort has been optimised with the addition of telescopic steering wheel adjustment to complement the existing tilt adjustment. The driver’s seat is also equipped with three position seat memory as well as eight-way power adjustment.

An auxiliary audio point for connecting portable MP3 players will be a welcome addition for Kiwis going on long road trips this summer and comes standard across all models.

Other standard features carried over from the previous model include leather trim, power windows, heated power mirrors, heated front seats and climate controlled air-conditioning, steering wheel-mounted audio and cruise control, MP3 compatible six-disc CD player with a nine speaker 240-watt BOSE® sound system and remote central locking with dual stage unlock.

Like the new Mazda3, the CX-7 adopts the new top-mounted Multi Information Display (MID) which provides the driver with a range of information on audio, fuel consumption, safety alerts and even maintenance reminders.

For added safety, the Multi Information Display also incorporates the monitor for the car’s reversing camera. The camera and rear view monitor display is activated when the shift lever is moved to the ‘Reverse’ position, with the ignition switch in the ON position. As soon as the transmission is moved out of ‘Reverse’ the screen returns to the previous display.

The CX-7’s active safety package includes six airbags (dual front, front side and head protecting front and rear curtain airbags), Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) as well as traction control, ABS anti-lock brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA).

The Active Torque Split All-Wheel Drive (AWD) computer controlled system constantly monitors the wheel speed and engine data to optimise grip according to the driving conditions and adjusts the torque distribution from 100:0 to 50:50 front to rear as required.

Like all Mazda passenger cars, every new Mazda CX-7 comes with mazdacare genuine servicing for the first three years or 100,000kms (whichever occurs first).

The CX-7 priced at $47,595 is available in Copper Red Mica, Crystal White Pearl, Galaxy Grey Mica and three new options of Stormy Blue Mica, Sparkling Black Mica and Aluminium Metallic. Visit www.mazda.co.nz for a full list of specifications details.
